Women in Mining – Times are Changing

Space X rocket launching from the launch pad.

Jeopardy fans, here's a trivia question for you:

What do Diana Baldwin, Anita Cherry, and Julie Shuttleworth have in common? These women made history in the mining industry as pioneers who broke the glass/coal/hard rock ceilings.

In 1974, Diana and Anita became the first women to work in a coal mine and the first female members of the United Mine Workers of America to work inside a mine. Julie Shuttleworth, currently with Fortescue, has over 18 years of experience in gold and copper mining. Under her leadership at Barrick Gold in Australia, women made up about 12 percent of workers at the mine, surpassing the industry average. These trailblazers advocated for gender equality and inclusivity within the industry. As a fan of female managers and executives, I am inspired by their vision and courage.

Do you know of any unsung female trailblazers? Share their stories with us in the comments below!
