What Makes A Great Leader?

Space X rocket launching from the launch pad.

"Great leaders are willing to sacrifice the numbers to save the people. Poor leaders sacrifice the people to save the numbers."

– Simon Sinek

Where are your numbers at? Are we going to hit our numbers? The numbers, the numbers!

It’s tough on leaders and senior executives to constantly hit their KPIs and achieve results - but a truly great leader knows this:

Great leaders are willing to sacrifice the numbers to save the people, while poor leaders sacrifice the people to make the numbers.

I’ll use the example of SouthWest Airlines again.

It puts human capital above all else. The team came first. And when things turned sour for the airline industry, the employees rallied around the company, making sacrifices for the greater good because the company stood by them.

Their staff turnover rate is incredibly low. They continually rank as one of the best airlines for achieving turn-around times, gate arrivals, and customer satisfaction. All are driven by an empowered, appreciated and rewarded team as the company makes profits.

Companies that cut jobs, cut hours, and cut support staff generally witness high turnover rates, decreased productivity, a decline in innovation, and a tarnished market reputation.
