Eric Clapton's dedication to his craft is an inspiration for all of us.
As Carlos Santana once said, "Everyone wants to play like Eric Clapton until they realize how long Eric Clapton practices to play like Eric Clapton."
In my leadership sessions, I use Eric's example to emphasize the importance of developing skills and expertise. When we put in the time and effort to truly master a subject, we gain the confidence to improvise and adapt to any situation.
This is especially critical in industries that require the utmost attention to safety, such as those that utilize heavy equipment.
When we practice, we learn more about the kinds of problems we can anticipate and how to overcome them, so when we meet them "in the field", we've already been there, so we can remain calm and confident to use our learning to rise to unexpected challenges. And when we succeed, we feel a sense of accomplishment that motivates us to continue practicing and improving.
Eric never stopped practicing throughout his entire career, and his dedication is evident in every one of his songs. Let's follow his example and see our life and careers as ongoing practice sessions, to continue to hone our skills, celebrate our successes, and always strive for improvement.
