Did you ever watch ‘Mythbusters’?
Back in 2003, two special effects experts used elements of the scientific method to test the validity of a long list of rumours, urban myths, and news stories. It made for engaging viewing.
I’m also a fan of testing hypotheses. I will occasionally be posting about so-called 'leadership myths', to dispel them and even investigate where they originated.
The first step is uncovering the myth and biases drawn from it. The second is understanding WHY the companies believe in them and how they impact leadership effectiveness. A lot of themes are repeated across client organizations. I’m not naming names. That’s not the point.
I’m continually learning from my clients and teams, and I’m curious to learn what myths you’ve uncovered (post them in the comments). Things will get messy as we uncover real issues.
Like when the MythBusters team accidentally fired a cannonball through the side of a house and into a minivan in a Dublin, California, neighbourhood. Nobody was hurt, but it left a lasting impression on doing things correctly. Something I’m keenly invested in.
