Creating a Culture of Firm and Fair Accountability

Space X rocket launching from the launch pad.

"You can pick your friends, but your family you're stuck with."

Anyone who's tried to organize a family reunion knows the frustration of delegating tasks and responsibilities. My own wife Jay knows this all too well, as she's seen me pull my hair out when family members ignore my emails, miss deadlines, and drop the ball.

But Jay had a great piece of advice: treat them like coaching clients.

And it's true, many managers struggle to hold their colleagues accountable when they're promoted from within. But setting SMART goals can help. By making objectives specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, employees take ownership and accountability.

Regular check-ins and dialogue keep everyone on track.

And I'm happy to say, I'm getting SMART with my family too. Tensions are dropping, and Jay couldn't be happier.
