What sushi taught me about being a better leadership coach and facilitator.
I’ll admit it. I really love a good sushi dinner. I’m also a bit curious… so I recently, discovered there are ‘rules’ for eating sushi. Did you know there is a Sushi University?
The world’s most famous sushi restaurant (Sukiyabahi Jiro) has 12 rules to follow before dining there – if you can even get reservation. And the top sushi chefs explain the proper way to enjoy sushi when dining out.
I won’t bore you with all the practices, etiquette and unspoken taboos, but the underlying theme for me is that I’m open to new ideas, I’m embracing change, and I feel excited by the continuous learning on a subject (or meal) I’m passionate about.
In the workplace, I speak with senior leaders often about what makes a good leader – instead of simply a people manager. Good leaders demonstrate adaptability and a desire to learn, practice and grow. We can train many skills, but the mindset, passion, and a curiosity to learn must be nurtured from within.
